January Climate Monologue

The most tangible of all visible mysteries - fire.

A quote given by 17th century critic and poet Leigh Hunt …..

Welcome to Perspectives On where we give the world a voice!

I am Lairalaine White, your host.

In Oregon, three dozen fires have burned more than 1 million acres, killed at least 10 people, left more than two dozen missing and forced more than 40,000 people to flee their homes.

Though the west coast, California, Oregon and Washington are often plagued by fires, Fire is a critical part of ecosystems in the West, and many plants and animals depend on it to thrive, but the heat and intensity of the wildfires now ravaging California, Oregon, Washington and other Western states are so destructive that wildlife in some areas may struggle to recover.

A new frontal system is expected to bring rains and thunderstorms that could suppress several fires, but the storms are also expected to cause wind gusts of up to 25 miles per hour. If high winds arrive in an area before the rain does, fire behavior could increase. Firefighters are making tremendous progress combating the huge wildfire complexes afflicting California – but, according to Gov. Gavin Newsom, the real battle is against climate change,

The average temperatures in the Golden State have increased by three degrees since 1980, illustrated most recently with the hottest August in recorded state history, according to Newsom.

On the east coast, last summer, the EPA confirmed several properties in Atlanta’s Vine City tested positive for lead, after an Emory University Doctoral student discovered it doing research. Then since February of this year, the EPA began an excavation effort only to halt efforts in the wake of the pandemic.

There is no denying that we are in a climate crisis!

As a professional in the Christian ministry, part of the “charge I have to keep” is to encourage believers who are also charged to be stewards of our Maker’s creation,

Stewards and keepers of the earth and the sea

Be mindful of your responsibility to the Creator.

The times of racial and environmental Injustice are demanding that we wake up to the reality of the impact the smoke from the west are having on the air quality in the East and around the US

Wake up to the consequences of burning fossil fuels

Wake up and be aware that on our present course more than a billion people could be displaced from their homes in the next 30 years

Wake up and understand that the world's poorest and most vulnerable populations will suffer the most.

Wake up and know that the subject is no longer climate change but a

Climate crisis…..

And we are NOT okay
